Significance of Omugwo

Omugwo is a term in the igbo language (spoken in Nigeria) for when a mother or mother in law comes to the home of a couple with a newborn baby. The visiting mother’s only role during this time is to help with the baby and care for the new mother. During this time, the new mother is fed delectable  dishes prepared by the visiting mother. The new mom may also receive hot towel massages, sitz baths, and various physically soothing activities. Some may also invite other elder women in the family to participate in the care of mother and baby. The new mother’s main expectation are to eat, nurse her child, rest, and recoup. After the mother has completed her Omugwo duties, she returns home with gifts from the couple. It is a beautiful tradition that is still very much alive and held in high regard. However, not everyone has the luxury of this experience, which is where the Omugwo Box comes in!
